Staircase Projects: Questions and How Requests Are Routed

Stair treads, risers, nosings and railings are specialized work. They are not part of this site's seven hardwood services. You can still mention a staircase project on the estimate form, and it will be flagged for separate routing.

Why stairs are handled separately

Stair work involves cutting and fitting individual treads, nosings and sometimes railings. Not every floor contractor does it. Keeping it separate avoids promising coverage for a service that has not been confirmed.

Questions to prepare

  • Are the stairs carpeted, painted, or existing hardwood?
  • Do you want to refinish existing treads or replace them?
  • Should the stair color match the floor at the top and bottom?
  • Are railings, balusters or newel posts part of the project?
  • Is the staircase open on one or both sides?

Matching stairs to floors

If stairs connect to a floor being refinished, color matching is easier when both are sanded and finished in the same project. Mention this on the form so both requests are understood together.
