Identify what you have
Species, board width, thickness and grade all affect the match. Red oak and white oak finish differently even in the same stain. A floor vent opening is often the easiest place to measure thickness and see the board profile.
Source matching material
Common widths are easier to match. Unusual widths or older milling may need special ordering. Salvaged boards from closets can help at the most visible seams.
Weave the tie-in
Weaving new boards into staggered existing ends avoids a straight line across the room. A straight seam with a threshold is sometimes used at doorways when weaving is not practical.
Refinish together
Sanding and finishing the extension with the connected existing floor gives the most consistent color and sheen. Finishing only the new area usually leaves a visible difference. Wood color also changes with age and light, so some variation can remain.
Height and subfloor
Old and new subfloors may sit at slightly different heights, especially where a wall was removed. This needs to be flattened before the new boards go in.
